Is there a program that will edit the partitions on my portable storage devices?

How do I partition my portable hardri? I have recently purchased a portable drive for my laptop (New drive does not come with any software). I want to format and partition this drive so that I can have up to 5 different partitions. One of these drives will be for a Database (MySql) I intend to install. Can someone please guide me through this process? Thanks

Creating a new partition on portable hard disk? I have a brand new western digital passport 160gb portable hard disk that doesn't recognise in My Computer. It does however appear in My Computer>Manage>Device Manager>Hard Disks. It appears as WD160gb External USB Device. I know that the problem is that it needs a partition to be created so windows can read it. Partitioning my Mac Hard Drive and a portable Hard Drive? Ok so I have a Macbook Pro and I wanted to partition the hard drive of my MBP so I could run Windows XP and Leopard. And also, I wanted to partition my portable 300Gb to where I would have all my iTunes junk on one partition and the other partition would be used for my computer backups. My BIG question is, if I partitioned my macbooks hd into 2 sections, would those 2 sections count as 1 partition on my portable hd or would I need to make an additional partition? In other words...would windows and OSX need their own partitions, or would the portable HD read fine with both OS's on one partition. Any help would be VERY Appreciated!

partition of portable hard drive..? i "accidently" partitioned my portable hard drive while looking at the settings.....i had downloaded a cd of music files onto it whilst using a pc....i have a mac and access to pcs..i could in theory live with the partition if i could use each partition for each system...is this possible? do i need to do anything to enable this? i read something about formatting both partitions in the same way that would enable this.....but the download limit for a file would be 4gb...how much is 4gb in terms of video or games? is it possible to erase the partition if necessary, and then erase the music from the pc using my mac....thus freeing it up to reformat to mac as a single partition... cheers in advance! the hard drive in question is a iomega prestige 320gb...

I just purchased a 320 GB Western Digital Portable Hard Drive and I would like to know if I can make multiple NFTS partitions on it without damaging anything on it. My laptop can boot from USB, I have booted Chromium OS off of a flash drive before with success. 500gb portable hard drive not working? It's an "iOmega" and it's not working on any of 4 different computers I tried. (3 windows xp, 1 Vista) the "safely remove hardware" tray icon appears, and when I click it it displays the hardware as "mass storage device" and when I go to the properties for the drivers, all of it seems to be in working order... my only problem is that it won't display in "My computer" ... I already had the portable drive partitioned and all my data was on it, I really don't want to lose all my stuff. this problem started this morning and it seemed like it happened for no reason... I've read similar questions like this, and everybody says "right click my computer and go to manage>disc management and assign the hard drive a letter... my problem here is that I can't assign it a letter unless I partition it, then after that, I can't access my files unless I format the hard drive, which isn't going to happen since I want to keep my files. I also already tried re-installing the drivers... that didn't work... I'm affraid it may have overheated last night... it was really hot... but this early this morning it was working just fine, then I left my house for a few hours, when I came back, it wasn't working. Please help! The is some stuff that is really important to me on there!

How to partition a portable hard drive? I have a maxtor 80Gb portable hard drive that I got so I can use my PS3 to play media files that in the past I've had to use my laptop for. I know that the PS3 will only read FAT32 formated drives and that to format to FAT32 you need drives smaller that 32Gb so I need to partiation my 80Gb up, but don't know how to do it. A quick seach on the internet only shows me how to do it by purchasing software which I don't really want to have to do. Is there any free/shareware out there that can do it or is there a way of doing it without using external software?

PC Problem: Why does my portable hard drive show up as an additional cd drive? My portable hard drive has two partitions which usually show up as Drive E and Drive F when plugged in the USB port. Now I noticed that the partitions are labeled Drive F and Drive G, while an additional CD drive (Drive E) is showing up on My Computer. I don't know how this happened when I always plug my portable hard drive on the same USB port. When I checked the properties of Drive E, it says that it is my portable hard drive. Now, I cannot download my unfinished torrents (which are saved in my Drive E partition) because my Drive E is supposedly being used. How do I get rid of this additional CD drive E (which is not a cd drive at all!!)? Help! how do I check if its a virtual drive? I don't remember installing any virtual drive software though. But I checked the properties of CD drive E and it says that its an hitachi laptop hard drive. (Hitachi Travelstar 4K120 40GB ATA-7 2.5in Notebook Hard Drive HTS421240H9AT00) My hard drive is NOT a hitachi. >_< Found a similar problem on http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/20525-45-deleting-virtual-drive-letter On my WinXP PC for some reason I have a drive in Explorer called F:, but I only have one hard drive . If u format a portable harddrive to "MS-DOS (FAT)", will that hard drive be able to play movies on the cpu too? this is excluding whether or not you have 2 partitions one being a different format. so basically what i am asking is if a hard drive will play music/movies on a computer with a "MS-DOS (FAT)" format so if changing the format won't change the file types that are read, then why does it need to be reformatted in order to play on xbox 360?

booting from a portable hard drive? I have a toshiba satellite A135, it came installed with vista home. I want to install xp to a portable hard drive, to use just on my one computer (i know i can use it on other computers, I would install it to my hard drive, but don't have the room). Problems with Maxtor External Portable Hard Drive.? Here's the story: 1. I got loads of virus and malware in my comp. So I backed-up all my document nd other files to a Maxtor Portable External Hard Drive. 2. Booted my XP CD from Startup. 3. I then deleted the 2 partition which pretty much cleaned my computer. 4. I proceeded to installing windows XP. 5. When I put my Maxtor External Portable Hard Drive back on my computer, IT JUST MAKES BEEPING SOUNDS. My computer no longer detects the external hard drive. 6. So I try it on my other laptop. And guess what, my Laptop recognizes it. It doesn't make any beeping sound. So I come into conclusion that the problem is with my computer. But I don't know which? I tried reinstalling Windows XP. The speakers are not detected as well. And our printers and other devices aren't detected either. I'd appreciate all your ANSWERS. Thank YOU!

Will lose everything in C drive if converted to external hd? My laptop just stopped working. I want to take out the hard drive and use it as external usb hd. All originating CD's and serials are lost, and I lacked the foresight to register the products. Therefore, I cannot re-install these programs, but would prefer to run them from the portable drive with all of the registry keys from A intact. Would using a multiboot partition work? And even then, would we still be maximizing the improved performance of a 64-bit system? Do I need to I create FAT32 and NTFS partitions on my external hard drive? I've just bought a WD Passport 250GB external portable hard drive to backup my old Win98SE desktop and current WinXP laptop. Do I need to I create a FAT32 partition for Win98 and NTFS partition(s) for WinXP? Its shipped as FAT32 so I know I should format it to NTFS for WinXP anyway. Links to further info are always helpful. Cheers. Both my desktop and laptop hard drives are full. I only use the desktop (Win98) for reference and some programs not migrated. However, the laptop is my day-to-day PC. So I intend to take full images of them both (20GB & 60GB respectively) on 2 separate partitions and then create a third partition for ongoing storage and syncing with the laptop (WinXP). The only thing is... this is all new to me and I'm not sure if this is feasible and/or sensible. After further digging it seems the drive is not compatible with Win98 after all. What is the proper way to format Western Digital Elements portable hard drive? I just bought a 500gb WD Elements portable hard drive. I plugged it in via usb and nothing. I'm running a Sony Vaio with XP. I went to Disk Management and it shows the drive as Unallocated but as 232.88gb. Completely Erase a Portable Hard Drive? Hi. I own a Western Digital 400GB My Passport Essential Hard Drive and recently my files have just been scattered everywhere, I've got virus though and through, and so I decided that on a virus free computer (so it doesn't just get re-infected) I am going to completely erase the hard drive to a non-recoverable state. (Kind of in the same way that DBAN does to your hard drives - except I can't use DBAN because it wipes all detected drives.) Now I have three questions... 1. What is a software I can use to do the wipe? (Free preferably but I am willing to pay) 2. Will I have to use some kind of software to recreate the partitions on the drive before it will be detected, etc...(For this, I believe I can just use the WD Fat32 Formatter provided on their website, but I would like to hear your suggestions too...) 3. If I format the drive to say Fat32, will it be recognized (or even able to support files from) a computer that has a NTFS encoded hard drive...? Formatting Is NOT what I am asking about, formatting data will not securely erase it.

I just built a new computer and I get access errors. ? I am trying to copy my MP3 and other files from my portable USB (not thumb drive) hard drive to my hard drive on my new computer. I get access denied errors. The total size of all the files is about 30 gig.These files are not on a network share and they are both NTFS partitions. Has anyone seen this error before?

Having trouble setting up a unique dual-boot system? I have Vista installed on my primary hard drive, and Ubuntu installed on a USB flash drive. The main reason I do this is because I want my linux partition to be portable, not to mention I simply don't want to deal with repartitioning my hard drive. What I WANT to happen is I want my computer to boot to Ubuntu if the thumb drive is plugged in when I switch on, otherwise I want it to boot to Vista. Instead what happened is this: If the thumb drive is plugged in then it boots to GRUB no problem. If it is not plugged in then it tries to find GRUB on the hard drive, and subsequently fails to load anything (grub is on the thumb drive obviously). I managed to restore the hard drive's MBR, so now Vista will boot without a hitch regardless of what the thumb drive is doing. However, now I can not get it to boot to the thumb drive at all. I have already checked the BIOS thoroughly, that is not the cause of the issue. I know that the problem lies within the MBR, but I have no idea how to set it up the way I want. Any suggestions?

External Hard Drive Partition Recovery IT gurus. Help!!!! I've just bought an external hard drive and have been in the process of moving everything to it so I can have more space on my computer. can you install an os on one partition of an usb drive when the installation files are on another partition? i want to install an operating system on my new portable harddisk i bought for my eee. i split it up in 2 partitions: one partition of 50 gigabytes, wich i want to use for os x (want to try to get it working), and the other partition is 415 gigabytes for data. i know how to get an usb drive bootable, but is it possible to make one partition bootable, put the installation files on that partition, and then install the os on another partition of the same drive? my problem is not running 2 os's on one disk (different partitions), that's just dualbooting. i want to put the install files (wich are usually on the dvd drive, but there's no dvd drive in a netbook) on one partition of my drive, and then install it on another partition of the same drive.

IDE drive to Portable USB drive? I have an old IDE drive from which I want to xfer my data to a larger USB drive. The IDE drive has 2-3 partitions. What is quickest and cheapest way.

I need to do a full re-installation of Windows XP but the CD might be scratched...(continued)? I was thinking about testing it by installing it to this portable hard drive I just bought. If it works then I'll know it's safe to do the installation on my computer's hard drive. I was wondering, how do I install it to the portable HD? If I pop in the cd will it ask me what partition or drive I want it installed? Will it the E:\ option show up so I can select it for the installation? Hardrives - What is unallocated space? I'm trying to format my 320 GB portable hardrive to Fat32 to work on my XP and Mac. I'm using a DiscWizard program to format it and am not sure what the step asking about unallocated space means. It wants me to enter the value I want for the "before" and "after" unallocated space. Do I need to put anything for them? And what should my "partition size" also be?

Need help with downloading yellow dog software 6 on to ps3.? I started to download it on to my HDD, but tried to "jump the gun" by skipping some steps to get it done faster. I was wondering if anyone can help. Here are all of the steps that i have done: 1)Download Yellow Dog 6 2)Burned the .iso image to a dvd-r blank disc 3)Backed up my ps3 HDD on to my portable hard drive/restarted ps3 4)Partitioned HDD for 10GB to "otheros" 5)Clicked on install other os 6)Booted up Yellow Dow, and started to install it, but at the bootloader screen it has a lot of stuff, but at the bottom it says "kboot" I read to type in "anaconda" after kboot but it did not do anything but but say that it was invalid and go back to kboot. My main question that i am asking is: Can i somehow go back to the ps3 software to restart the process or is there a way i can fix something wrong that i did? Vista Disk Partition Deletion..? Okay, to get things straight, I don't know much about computers (so use small words when able). Anyway, my parents bought me this 320 GB Vista computer. When I looked, it said that it only had 50 GB on the C Drive (I apparently only have the C drive and the Recovery Drive). When I stumbled upon the Disk Management page, it says: HP (C:) 291.83 GB NTFS Healthy Now, I know it doesn't say 320 GB because I've heard the OS takes some space, and plus I've used 47 GB out of the 50 GB given to me. How can I delete this partition if I have one? (REMEMBER: Small - easy to make sense words) Hopefully it isn't too complicated, because I'd hate to screw something up in the process. PS: I'm already being sent a 320 GB Portable Harddrive, I just thing it would be better to have the 320 on this computer PLUS the space on the Portable Hardrive. PPS: Off topic, but how much of a difference will a 256 MB Video Card make on my video game playing? (With games like Oblivion and Supreme Commander.)

I have a problem with my laptop(or notebook),it crashed.? So,it all happened some hours ago.I needed to reformat my laptop,so i backuped all what i needed to on my portable hard disk.Then i started the setup of windows xp.I have two partitions on my laptop,C and D.I deleted D to delete all the data on it and recreated it.When i tried to delete partition C ,it said that there are temporary setup files or something like that on it.I search for the solution on Google and i downloaded Delpart.exe which was supposed to clean the temporary setup files.Before downloading it,i saw that my laptop found a generic volume...i just put cancel.I suppose that it was the new partition D.When i lauched delpart,a small window opened and it said,that delpart wanted to access directly the hard disk or something like that,i closed the window and then delpart told me that no hard disks were found.I restarted my laptop and then automatically entered the Xp Setup.I chose to repair windows.It started to repair.Then the laptop restarted.After the xp boot screen,there`s a blue window appearing where it`s written Setup cannot be completed and then it keeps restarting and restarting.What can i do ?I just want to reinstall xp as my laptop got too much programs and files installed on C and it`s slow.Please help me.

Hard drive for video editing? I'm in the market for a portable hard drive. I'm going to be using Final Cut Pro and want a portable hard drive that'll have one partition for backup and the other for video stuff and other storage. Price doesn't necessarily concern me as much. I'm looking at either a 500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive or a 320 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I want the 500GB for its capacity but the 320 GB for its speed. Would there be much of a difference in regards to speed if I went with the 500 GB over the 320 GB? Which one should I get? (My focus in regards to speed is mainly on video editing, not necessarily the backup)

External HDD formatted to Fat32 for use on xbox360 but still not detected.? I recently bought a Maxtor 500GB external hard drive to use as a media library for my xbox360. Having looked around on the internet at all the sites regarding how to do this, I have done the following; Used Partition Magic to format the hard drive in to 3 partitions; [F:] Media One (83GB), [M:] Media Two (196GB) and [V:] Media Three (196GB). These are all formatted in FAT32 and are listed on Partition Magic as logical drives on an Extended primary partition. I have loaded some videos and some music on each of the different partitions to test them out on the XBox360 and then plugged it in to the socket, and then the usb port on the xbox. It is on, but when I try and access the files from my Xbox360, the portable device is not clickable. Have I gone wrong somewhere? I have tried to follow all the guides people have out there as close to the letter as I can, and yet something seems to have gone wrong. Have I missed something? Have I done something wrong? This has been bugging me non-stop for the past few days, so any and all advice would be sincerely appreicated.

Looking for hard drive synchronization program for Mac OS/X? I have two hard disk drives, one portable I take with me and one at home. I've seen my share of drive crashes or if the drive ever was lost. Is there a good synchronization program that will mirror the drives and only update the files that were changed? If I created a RAID mirror set would require a full image to be created and re-imaged so that's not an option. If anyone could be of any assistance I would appreciate it! This drive has multiple partitions including boot partitions for Mac OS, Fat32 partitions, and regular HFS+ partitions such as for Time Machine.

My computer can't read the full PATA harddisk!? I bought a new computer (E5200 duo core) and I have a Samsung harddisk with these specs: 300GB/7200rpm/8M/PATA. I have 2 partitions (120GB and 180GB i think) in the harddisk. However, my computer can only read one of the partition, which is the smaller one, and display the larger one as only 1GB! I can see everything inside the bigger partition but I cannot add anything into it. Is there anyway to see the full other partition? Any programme to download? I am not using the harddisk as my master drive (access only through USB port, it is NOT a portable harddisk though!!) so I think I don't have to touch the BIOS. Or am I right?

Cannot see Windows AUTO UPDATE ANYMORE.. HELP..!? About a month ago, i saw my Windows XP Auto Update detected a XP Service Pack 3 Update ( i dont really like to use any other OS, coz my pc config isnt as good for others and i cant right now afford buying high cost peripherals)..i started it but found that i'll have to out a lot time for first backing up my existing data..at that time my xams were on..and plus i dint have a high capacity back up device...now that my xams are over..i borrowed an 80GB portable HD from a friend and backed up all important data...the update icon was down on the system tray all the days during my xmas and while i was doing my back up...but when i then went down to see the auto update icon after back up finished. i saw it was gone..!!..i just could not see the icon anymore..i tried to get that update again from Windows Security Center form..but it wasnt working..plz tell how can i get that update back again...I want to install it again...i have to hand back the portable drive back to my friend too..its getin late and he needs it..i think i lost that icon..coz it was there for a month and i kept procrastinating all the back up work for some or the other reason over a fairly long period of time i.e for abt a month .and now is gone...plz help how can i get that XP SP 3 update back again..PLZ HELP..!! i am not a very expert user..i dont indulge in installing software unless it is not detected as an update or i need it..i dont knoq much abt core details of an OS or software , like the Reg keys..i dont even know how to install properly an OS..i mean i cant figure out the thign abt partitions..i know what a partition exactly is..i have studied it...but i just cant do it practically.. plz give ur answer to my above question keeping the above things in mind..!! Using a usb hard drive for file storage (the saved files aren't accessible)? i plugged the new 80GB portable drive into my laptop and installed the driver successfully. i then read the user manual but i do not know what 'Confirm that the hard-disk is set as master mode' means or what relevance 'The new hard disk should be divided into sections with FDISK first' has. on each preformatted partition there is a Word file. Unfortunately, i got as far as Disk Management' and found that these instructions then become redundant as if they are for an earlier operating system than Windows XP. there ws nowhere to right click and select 'Initialise Disk' but i clicked on 'make active' assuming that must be what it meant. however, i then realised that there is nowhere to select any of the further prescribed options because 'Initialise Disk' needs to be selected first and it doesn't exist! i have saved a folder of pictures onto the first partition but the contents of the folder cannot be opened or viewed. do i need to buy and install an operating system on the drive? thx for the speedy advice guys.there is nothing on the hardware itself to adjust settings. the manual does not explain HOW to set it to master mode and surely my laptop is the master, no? i seem to have successfully saved my files to the disk which is all i want to do. is there a program i should be adding in order to open them just as windows allows me to use software like photoshop, word, etc? i have sorted this problem out now...thank you for all the helpful responses. the drive was working properly but i appear to have tried saving files on it before it had settled down into a state of smooth operation, hence they could not be opened. it just suddenly worked, in fact, but i have now formatted the drive and it is working just fine.

Ubuntu installs? I'm currently running K/Ubuntu on a Dell Dimension 8400, alongside a Windows XP partition. I'd like to install Ubuntu a second time onto a portable disk, but I don't think I can do this without booting a second time from the live CD. Does anybody know if I can install it again from the hard drive?
