Portable Hard Disk problem..urgent,pls help!!!?

Hi, i have a 40gigt portable hard disk, and i did partition them into 2,20,20 each. yesterday i found that one of my hard drive do not function, not accessible, but the file inside the hard drive are very important to me, how to retrieve them back? is it possible i recombine both partition in one, is it the hard drive will function again? the file inside will be damaged? any software to help?thanks
