Mobile Partitions

I have bought a portable hard drive. It is 80GB. I want to partition the hard drive.?

My question is do i make a primary or extended partition?Note that I do not intend to use the hard drive to boot windows. What kind of partition should i make and how many for optimal performance? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank YOU! Here is my dilemna..Since this is a portable hard drive and i will be connecting it to various pc's..wont try 2 load operating system from it if i make primary partition? Right now it doesn't have any partition..its unallotted.. I still haven't go a proper answer. Some one please... I emphasise once again..It's a portable hard drive..I have no wish 2 use it boot operating system.. dilemnas..will creating a primary partition make pc's try 2 boot operating sysytem from my drive? what difference does it make which one i do?

  1. optimal performance is one partition, why would you use more if your not booting windows?? extended obviously.
  2. My standard is always use primary partition. Last time when I use extended, during formatting, the extended partition somehow merged with primary partition, so my only option to format all since I can't choose the extended partition. How many primary partition, it's up to you to decide (max primary partition for 1 HDD is 4)
  3. for you to make you mind up what type of partitions you want take a look at this site http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/structPartitions-c.html it explains everything you'll ever want to know about hard disk partitioning
  4. Create 1 primary partition the whole size of the drive for optimum performance. -- Edit -- No the system won't try to boot from the drive as long as the partition on it is not set to active (bootable). Just creating a primary partition does not flag it as a bootable drive. Plus if you format the drive using NTFS a system will not try to boot from it if it's connected via USB.
  5. You can make as many partition as you want. but you can only make one primary and one extended partition, you can create one or more than one logical drives in extended partition.
  6. 4 drive
  7. firstly, you have to format your portable hard disk completely as full format. After you'll have to make extended partition 20GB each.
  8. There can be overall of 4 partitions. In extended you can have as many as logical drives
