Hardrives - What is unallocated space?

I'm trying to format my 320 GB portable hardrive to Fat32 to work on my XP and Mac. I'm using a DiscWizard program to format it and am not sure what the step asking about unallocated space means. It wants me to enter the value I want for the "before" and "after" unallocated space. Do I need to put anything for them? And what should my "partition size" also be?

  1. You should make a partition of about half for each OS.
  2. first of all .. unallocated space means the rest of free space ... use the XP cd to create partitions and select C to format it and install OS if you don't know how much to put in a partition here is a example : if you want C to be lets say 50 Gb put there 50000; ... when the setup of XP is finished go to the rest of partitions (D or E or F - depends how many partitions you created ) and double click on each and format it ( quick format ) on a hard drive 320 Gb is recomended to split in : C : 50 Gb , and the rest in half ...
