Cannot see Windows AUTO UPDATE ANYMORE.. HELP..!?

About a month ago, i saw my Windows XP Auto Update detected a XP Service Pack 3 Update ( i dont really like to use any other OS, coz my pc config isnt as good for others and i cant right now afford buying high cost peripherals)..i started it but found that i'll have to out a lot time for first backing up my existing data..at that time my xams were on..and plus i dint have a high capacity back up device...now that my xams are over..i borrowed an 80GB portable HD from a friend and backed up all important data...the update icon was down on the system tray all the days during my xmas and while i was doing my back up...but when i then went down to see the auto update icon after back up finished. i saw it was gone..!!..i just could not see the icon anymore..i tried to get that update again from Windows Security Center form..but it wasnt working..plz tell how can i get that update back again...I want to install it again...i have to hand back the portable drive back to my friend too..its getin late and he needs it..i think i lost that icon..coz it was there for a month and i kept procrastinating all the back up work for some or the other reason over a fairly long period of time i.e for abt a month .and now is gone...plz help how can i get that XP SP 3 update back again..PLZ HELP..!! i am not a very expert user..i dont indulge in installing software unless it is not detected as an update or i need it..i dont knoq much abt core details of an OS or software , like the Reg keys..i dont even know how to install properly an OS..i mean i cant figure out the thign abt partitions..i know what a partition exactly is..i have studied it...but i just cant do it practically.. plz give ur answer to my above question keeping the above things in mind..!! 2. switch to linux. it's free, updates are automatic, and it's open source which means anyone who knows how to program can make a program to do anything on it OR fix a bug it's having, which generally makes it a bit more stable. i know you don't think your computer is high powered enough, but linux actually makes less demands on processor speed and memory than windows xp. plus, you can get help on any question from a lot of people who are huge linux geeks and love to see people switch. i know it sounds like this is only something for really really good with computers type people but i'm just a normal internet addict and it didn't take me long to get the hang of it at all! one of the easy to learn versions can be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
3. probably check your os is genuine using checker from microsoft .com if found valid then turn on update icon by right clicking my computer icon ->automatic updates.
