How thick is a typical residential interior partition wall?

Hi all - I'm guessing that a typical wall interior residential wall is 5" thick. Is this correct? I am assuming there is .5" thick gypsum board on each side nailed to 4" wide wooden 2x4's and that equals 5". Am I missing something here? It just seems that 5" is a low number. Thanks thanks guys - i'm also wondering how thick the outside wall would be for a three flat building in chicago with a brick veneer. is 1'-4" a good estimate?

  1. Interior walls are 2x4, which is 3-1/2", plus 1/2" drywall on each side. Total = 4-1/2". Good luck. EDIT: For the outside wall, depending on the age of the building, Your framing will be either 2x4 or 2x6. This gives you 3-1/2" or 5-1/2", plus 1/2" for the drywall, 1/2" for the exterior sheathing (plywood), plus a 1" airspace between the wall and the brick, and 3-5/8" for the brick. Total = 9-1/8" or 11-1/8".
  2. The 2x4 is 3and 5//8. the drywall is usually 1/2 or 5/8.
  3. the 2x4 stud is actually 3-1/2'' thick and the dry wall is 1/2'' on aether side so your total thickness is 4-1/2''
  4. your interior partition wallsare usually 2x4 unless it's a load bearing wall then it could be 2x6
