Do I (owner) need a bldg. permit to add or put up a partition wall w/ a door enclosing a living room section?

You can make changes to your home with out a permit, Putting up a wall would be a cosmetic or just for looks, Permits are pulled to protect the home owner and to get a professional inspection of the job, "CODE" should be considered the minimum, So when a job is done to "CODE" it meets the minimum requirements of a job well done, Permits should always be pulled by the person doing the job, Never pull a permit yourself if someone is hired to do the job for you. If they cannot get a permit, then most likely they shouldn't be working on your home.

  6. the only reason i would pull a permit is if your going to run eclectic in the wall like running new outlets light switches. not sure of your area but for 25 dollars here, just to be on the safe side i would.

  8. I'm in agreement with the first answer. Go to your county building inspection office and simply ask them. Some jurisdictions have more intrusive requirements than others, so you really aren't going to get a sufficient answer here...

  10. No! If you know what you're doing, electrical or not, don't waste your time or money on the permit. You are the owner and internal modifications of this type are only limited by your abilities.
  11. your local city commissioners will say yes, here we need a permit to fart and brush our teeth (and replace a water heater). but if you are not messing with any structural issues (making changes in a bearing wall, wiring, plumbing, gas, such as that) what they don't know won't hurt them they take enough of my money anyway, just do it.
